Louisa Lydia Romero

January 28, 1939 ~ October 13, 2021 (age 82)

Obituary

On Wednesday October 13, 2021, Louisa Lydia Romero loving wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully at the age of 82 surrounded by her family. Louisa was born in the small town of Chamisal, New Mexico where she grew up and moved to Albuquerque with her mother and siblings following the unexpected death of her father. She graduated from Menaul High School in 1957 and received her bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of New Mexico in 1963. She married her husband of 59 years in 1961 and they raised two children, Victor and Deborah. She enjoyed a fulfilling 30-year career as an Elementary School teacher for Albuquerque Public Schools retiring in 1996. Louisa may have been tiny in stature (nicknamed Tweety) but she was powerful in spirit. She lived her life under her terms and would fiercely defend her independence. While no one could tell her what to do she unselfishly devoted her time to help others. She had a the most loving heart and shared it with her entire extended family. She loved to take care of her nieces and nephews. Her house was filled with wonder and excitement with all the toys and pets that awaited kids. Those who stayed with Louisa never wanted to leave with their parents when it was time to go.
She was generous and was always willing to help anyone who came to her. She loved her siblings who often gathered together for game nights where they shared stories and ate food that they took turns providing. Similarly, Louisa loved the casino, but this was not a social occasion for her! She wanted to gamble alone as she believed that if someone watched over her shoulder, her luck would turn south. She was a lone wolf during her casino outings. Often, when the family would visit from out of town, Louisa would mention to her confidant Rose that she had to stay home because she was not allowed to gamble when her granddaughters were visiting. She remained true to her word but would head straight to the casino shortly after her guest’s departure.
It was quite a shock to Louisa when instead of a boy being born, we were surprised by the birth of her granddaughter Emma. Louisa kept asking “are you sure it’s a girl?” Louisa loved being a grandmother to Leslie and Emma. Both girls loved to spend time at Nana’s house being spoiled with love and affection. Nana was never too tired to take the girls to the store for surprises or to have them go through the collections and pick out pieces each liked. She will be remembered always for her big loving heart!
Deborah her daughter who she affectionately called her “Saggy Baggy Elephant” would love to spend time going to garage sales together through which Louisa amassed quite a variety of collections which she would display with pride around her house and would regularly change them out. We always looked forward to what the display of the month would be when we visited. Deborah and Lani took mother to live with them towards the end of life where she would watch her favorite game shows while reclining with her Boston Terrier/bulldog Taffy and her ardent admirer the parti poodle, Franny. They spent many a night having mama call them on the cellphone (even though they were in the same house) to tell them that she needed water or to rearrange her bed. It was a labor of love to spoil Louisa through her final days.  She was preceded in death by her Father Melendrino and by her mother Adelina. Her husband Ausencio. Her sister Famy, brothers Abner, Mele, Herbert and Robert and sister Florida. She is survived by her son Victor and his wife Laura, daughter Deborah and her wife Lani, her brother Raymond, sisters Rose, Emily and Lillian. Her granddaughters Emma and Leslie and her husband Jordan. Services will be on Saturday October 23rd at 11:00 am at Second Presbyterian Church, 812 Edith Blvd NE, Albuquerque NM 87102.
