Ausencio Romero

October 25, 1937 ~ October 25, 2020 (age 83)

On Sunday October 25, 2020, Ausencio Romero, loving husband and father, passed away peacefully on his birthday at the age of 83. He was born on October 25, 1937 in the town of Truchas, NM and moved to Albuquerque to attend Menaul High School. After serving in the US Army, he graduated with a Master’s degree in Education from the University of New Mexico in 1969 and worked as an elementary school principal for 20 years. He married his wife Louisa Lopez in 1961 and together they raised their son Victor and daughter Deborah.

Ausencio loved children, whether it was his own, nephews, nieces or his students, he devoted all his time to giving young minds direction and positive motivation. He often remarked that a child becomes what he or she hears about themselves. He was always cognizant of the effect positive words would have on a child and would always be quick to lavish praise. He loved fishing. During the long summer breaks from school , Ausencio could be found at the lake with his kids on an old green fishing boat that he restored himself. His boat was easily recognized by his dogs a chihuahua and a pekingese sitting happily in the front of the boat like figureheads on a ship’s prow. His dog’s were also a big part of his life. It didn’t matter the breed he loved them all and usually had several at the same time. We often teased him that he missed his children so much that he replaced his kids with pugs. He was always very civic-minded. He would patrol his neighborhood  carrying a trash bag with a pug dog by his side striving to keep his small part of the city clean. Hopper, as he was known to friends, was  a very gregarious individual who if left in a room of strangers would have a room full of friends in a very short time. He loved conversation and was universally appreciated for his wit and for his never ending stories. His spirit will live on in our hearts and in the fond memories of his joyful spirit.

He was preceded in death by his father Anastacio, his mother Floripa and his sister Elisaida. He is survived by his wife Louisa, his son Victor and his wife Laura , his daughter Deborah and her wife Lani, his grandchildren Leslie and Emma. His brothers Isauro, Silverio and Dennis and his sister Genoveva and many more close relatives.
